The back of the First Contact box said:

FIRST CONTACT... A MEETING OF SPECIES BUT NO MEETING OF MINDS.

Outnumbered, outgunned - human cunning and ingenuity are your only chance!
Mankind is prosperous, unthreatened and therefore militarily weak, yet through technical supremacy has spread throughout the galaxy.
The unthinkable has happened - thousands of armed alien vessels pass unchallenged through the occupied quadrants of the galaxy. The first violation has occurred. Alien forces penetrate the station 9W/4 vital to human inter-galactic communication. Your cunning and ingenuity in controlling and programming the maintenance droid on the station is the last hope of mankind.
Startegic gameplay giving months of enjoyment.
Faced paced action.
Superb graphics.
Immense play area with four decks and entire alien vessel.
Attention to detail gives total enjoyment.
Choice of action orientation or deep strategy play.
ANOTHER RAINBIRD CLASSIC

It's unfortunate that the box artwork for First Contact was unoriginal and hugely derivative. It didn't even try to disguise its origins; the alien creature is extremely close to the classic 'alien' from the eponymous movie series, and the cocooned victim is from the movie sequel Aliens. The people huddled around the computer console were also obviously based on an easily recognisable still from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.
